AGM batteries: Powerful & durable

Everyone is talking about AGM batteries, but what is really behind this technology? Are they just hype or do they actually offer tangible benefits? In this detailed blog post, we take a closer look at AGM batteries and explain everything you need to know. From the technical basics to the specific advantages and the ideal areas of application - you'll find all the answers here!

AGM stands for "Absorbent Glass Mat" and describes a special design of lead-acid batteries. In contrast to conventional wet batteries, in which the electrolyte (the acid) is liquid, in AGM batteries it is completely absorbed in a glass fiber fleece. This fleece acts like a sponge and holds the acid securely in place. As a result, there is no more free electrolyte space and the battery is completely sealed and maintenance-free.
AGM batteries belong to the category of VRLA batteries (Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid), which means that they are valve-regulated. This means that they only release gases in the event of overpressure, for example during the charging process. During normal operation, the resulting gas is recombined, i.e. converted back into acid and bound in the glass fiber fleece. This closed circuit makes AGM batteries absolutely maintenance-free and leak-proof - a major advantage over conventional wet batteries.
The special construction with glass fiber mats has some decisive advantages that make AGM batteries an attractive choice:
The full contact surface between plates and electrolyte enables faster electron exchange. This means that the battery can deliver more power in less time compared to conventional batteries - ideal for powerful starts or demanding applications.
AGM batteries are known for their high cycle stability, which means that they can be discharged and recharged more frequently before they lose their capacity. This results in a significantly longer service life compared to conventional batteries.
AGM batteries also cope well with low currents and can still reliably supply power even when partially discharged. This makes them ideal for vehicles with start-stop systems or for applications where the battery is often only used for short periods.
The compressed plate packs and close-fitting separators make AGM batteries particularly resistant to vibrations and shocks. This makes them the ideal choice for off-road vehicles, motorcycles or boats, where they function reliably even under demanding conditions.
Thanks to the efficient exchange of electrons, AGM batteries can be recharged more quickly than conventional batteries. This is particularly important for vehicles with start-stop systems or applications with short charging cycles.
AGM batteries are versatile and are particularly suitable for the following applications:
The high performance and cycle stability make AGM batteries the ideal choice for modern vehicles with automatic start-stop systems that place high demands on the battery.
Even if your vehicle is mainly used for short distances and the battery is not always fully charged, AGM batteries are a good choice as they work reliably even at low currents.
The vibration resistance and robustness make AGM batteries the perfect choice for motorcycles that are frequently exposed to vibrations and shocks.
As supply batteries in boats and motorhomes, AGM batteries provide a reliable power supply for lighting, electronics and other consumers.
Fast recharging and the ability to provide power even when partially discharged make AGM batteries a good choice for solar systems and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS).
Although AGM batteries offer many advantages, there are also some applications for which they are less suitable:
For applications with extremely high currents and loads, such as in industrial trucks or large commercial vehicles, special traction batteries are more suitable.
Although AGM batteries can handle heat better than conventional batteries, they are more susceptible to damage at extreme temperatures, especially at very high temperatures.
AGM batteries are a powerful and versatile battery technology that can impress in many areas of application. Their high performance, long service life, vibration resistance and freedom from maintenance make them an attractive choice for demanding users.
